Taking
the stage for the first time in Madison,
Wisconsin, House was facing a bit of an
uphill battle. A large part of the audience
was there for an earlier private party so
they weren't specifically there to see House.
Luther's Blues is a great venue, but unless
it's mostly full it still can feel quite
empty.

House
was accompanied by two band mates who played
drums, keys and bass bringing new life to
songs that I've only heard live as solo
acoustic numbers. They opened with the beautiful,
heartbreaking, song, 'Waste Another Day.'
From there, the band treated the crowd to
the infectious tune, 'Tell Me a Lie,' in
which House draws you in with his witty
yet honest lyrics. Soon after, the band
picked up the tempo with the gospel-tinged
song, 'Lay Down in Your Fields,' giving
the crowd no choice but to pay attention. It
may have been the songs or maybe the power
of House's special Superman underwear, but
the crowd enthusiastically brought the band
back for an encore. House treated us to
a mesmerizing rendition of 'Amsterdam,'
saying that he doesn't play it live very
much, but wanted to do so for the Madison
crowd. 'Just a Dream' closed the nearly
2 hours of music ensuring that House will
draw a much larger crowd the next time he
is in Wisconsin.

Not
wasting a lot of time chatting, except when
asking folks to get up out of their seats
to join the band up front, House ran through
a great set list. We heard some new songs
such as a beautiful piano - driven ballad
called, 'Only Love Remains,' with House
channeling Bono - level emotion to this
listener's delight. Another new tune, 'Get
This Straight,' had a strong country vibe
and was a crowd pleaser. In fact, House
won the crowd over with these songs enough
so that a few people were inspired to break
out with some, very white/non-rhythmic dance
moves·be careful what you wish for, Griffin.

Near
the end of the night, House shared another
new song entitled, 'The Guy That Says Goodbye
To You Is Out Of His Mind.' It's the kind
of heart-on-your-sleeve song that draws
you in and stays with you for days after.
Hopefully, House will record these new songs
very soon for us all to enjoy between concerts.
